8 Weekend Habits of Successful People
8 Weekend Habits of Successful People
If you are a regular 9:00 am to 5:00 pm worker, I am sure you will understand how important weekends are. For many, the weekend is the only time of the week where you have enough time to rest, go shopping and spend time with your family. In fact, most times weekends always feel like it is over too soon.
However, as fun-filled as the weekend is, how you choose to spend it may have a great impact on your productivity in the week ahead. The major problem now lies in how one can find a balance between underutilization and overwhelming oneself with work during the weekends.
I have seen some friends whose weekends are of no difference from their weekdays. The office workers among them spend weekends trying to catch up with the unfinished office assignments and the entrepreneurs among them still occupy themselves with business engagements when they are supposed to take a break and rejuvenate themselves for the week ahead. In fact, this particular attitude was the cause of the crash in the marriage of a neighbor of mine. But what surprises most is that most of these people still perform below par in their offices and businesses. This means success is not really about overworking but doing the right things at the right time and in the right way.
So, what are those things that successful people engage in during their weekends that still keep them on top of their game? This article reviews those habits and how you can emulate them in your lifestyle also.
#1 – Take a break
Our body system needs a break after the long stressful weekday activities and this is the reason successful people do not play with their weekends. The weekend is the right time to give your body the rest it deserves by engaging in activities that will rejuvenate you and boost your creativity. These activities may vary from playing your favorite music, taking your piano lesson or any other activity that will totally disconnect you from brain draining office work.
#2 – Spend time with your family
One thing that is common with successful people is that they do not prioritize business over their connectivity with their family. As a career man or woman, it is quite understandable that your work or business is very important, but your family needs you in making some vital decisions that may impact the unity in the family and children’s upbringing
#3 – Exercise
Sitting on an office chair from 9-to-5 everyday does your body greater harm than you can ever imagine. Engaging in exercises does not only rejuvenates your body system but also clears your mind and increases your sleep and creativity. Exercise does not mean you should jug 5 miles every weekend but choosing a simple activity that works for you and can be done on a regular basis. This may be dancing, walking, or rope skipping. If you try this you will notice that you become more active at work because by engaging in exercises your body releases important chemicals that help your body to recover from the stress of the previous week.
#4 – Spend time with yourself
One thing that can never be found missing in the weekend schedule of most successful people is having time to assess themselves. Spending some time with yourself on the weekend will give you the opportunity to reflect on your achievement in the past week and plan on making improvements for the coming week. Since success itself is not a straight road, you need constant evaluation, drawing lessons from your failures, and restrategizing to prevent future occurrence. Maybe that’s why Bill Gates once said: “It’s fine to celebrate success in business but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.”
#5 – Stop multitasking on weekends
Yes, as a serious-minded person the luxury of time you have on weekends might tempt you to think of improving your productivity by engaging in so many activities. Multitasking reduces efficiency and effectiveness and that’s exactly what most of the successful people have understood which has made them plan their weekends the same way they plan their weekdays. You can never see them replying to emails while jogging beside the road or calling while on a treadmill. Multitasking puts pressure on your brain and forces the body to respond the same way it does when in a stressful situation. Instead of multitasking, plan and organize your weekend and enjoy every single bit of it.
#6 – Read your favorite book
Reading is one way you can achieve two things at a time. You can choose to read a book that will improve you in your business or workplace while your brain is still programmed to see it as an ordinary leisure task. This is what most successful people do by taking advantage of their weekends to get themselves familiar with the latest developments in their area of business and gain experience from their predecessors which they can easily apply in their own business.
#7 – Engage in volunteer services
One way you can make your weekend a fulfilling one is by engaging in volunteering services that will cut you off from thinking about yourself and your business but getting busy with putting smiles in the faces of the underprivileged people or helping out in a community project.
This is what most wealthy people do according to the study carried out by Tom Corley before writing his book titled “Wealthy Habits: The Daily Success Habits of the Wealthy
#8 – Plan for the week ahead
Yes, most successful people do not spend all their weekend attending to their business but none of them dispute that weekends are the secret weapon of a productive week ahead.
To hit the ground running on Monday of the following week you have to plan ahead the weekend before. Jack Dorsey who is known to notoriously work up to 16-hour daily replies when he was asked about his weekends; “Saturday I take off. I hike. So, to have a productive week, ensure all your goals for the week ahead have been clearly stated and activities outlined with specific milestones for measuring achievements.
